Underground Solutions® Fusible C-905® Pipe Used to Slipline Failed 24" Techite Water Line in Sunnyvale, CA

In August 2007, Underground Solutions, Inc. (UGSI) contracted with Preston Pipelines to provide UGSI's Fusible C-905® pipe and fusion services to rehabilitate a failed 24" water line in Sunnyvale, CA. UGSI began pipe fusion on August 20th and the line was installed and pressurized on August 23rd. The street was paved on August 25th, and accepted for use August 27th, the same day an adjacent high school opened for the new school year.

UGSI's Fusible C-905® pipe allowed the City of Sunnyvale to maximize internal diameter based on external pipe size and the required pressure class. Although other materials (including HDPE) were considered for this emergency project, Fusible C-905® was selected because it provided 35% - 57% more flow area than alternative materials having a similar outside diameter. The larger ID of Fusible C-905® will result in lower operating pressure and will reduce pumping costs over the life of the pipeline.

Sunnyvale Public Works Director, Marvin A. Rose, said, "The ability of Preston Pipeline (contractor), Underground Solutions, Roberts and Brune (fittings and pipe supplier), and O'Grady Paving, working in conjunction with the City's Field Services' crews, to provide a quick response to this emergency pipeline repair allowed the work to be completed in about one week. The City of Sunnyvale maintained a tight schedule due to the high volume of street traffic, and the scheduled opening day of an adjacent high school. The use of Fusible PVC™ enabled the repair to be completed within the available time and budget."
