Underground Solutions Supplies Fusible PVC™ Pipe for Wanaao Road Siphon Installation in Kailua, HI
In January 2008, Underground Solutions, Inc. (UGSI) contracted with Frank Coluccio Construction (FCC) to supply Fusible PVC™ pipe and fusion services for a new siphon installed under the Kaelepulu stream in Kailua, HI. The siphon was part of the Wanaao Road Project for the City and County of Honolulu. The new siphon, which involved the simultaneous installation of several different sizes of Fusible C-900® pipe in a single bore hole, was installed via Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) by Michels Directional Crossings.

The siphon design required the HDD section to be either Fusible PVC™ pipe or HDPE. Because of the superior strength of PVC, the Fusible PVC™ pipe could be downsized as compared to its HDPE counterparts while maintaining the required ID, pressure class, and critical buckling pressure. The combined reduction in pipe ODs for the bundle allowed the bore diameter to be reduced to 42" versus the 48" bore hole that would have been required with HDPE.
An official with The City and County of Honolulu stated: "This was an excellent opportunity for the City and County of Honolulu to use Fusible PVC™ pipe. We are encouraged by the opportunities that the use of Fusible PVC™ pipe will provide in the future."
